Project 529 - Bike Theft Prevention
Project 529 is the largest and most advanced online bike registry in North America. Self-Register your bike to help prevent bike theft.
Surrey Police Service (SPS) is partnering with Project 529 to make it harder for thieves to steal your bicycle and easier for you to get it back if it’s stolen. SPS has joined a growing number of police agencies in this community-based bicycle registration and recovery service.
What is Project 529?
Project 529 is a simple, community-powered way to help protect your bike and improve the chances of getting it back if it is ever lost or stolen. By registering your bike, you create a secure record of key details such as the serial number, photos, and identifying features. This information can help law enforcement and the broader cycling community identify your bike and support recovery efforts.
Cyclists can also add a 529 Shield, a tamper-resistant decal with a unique identification code linked to the bike’s registration. When placed in a visible location on the frame, the Shield can act as a deterrent and gives officers, community members, and potential buyers another way to identify a registered bike.
How it works?
- Register your bike online by adding the serial number, make, model, and photos.
- Keep your bike information up to date so it is easy to identify.
- Add a 529 Shield if available for another visible layer of protection.
- If your bike goes missing, report it to police and update your registration so it can be flagged in the system.
- If a registered bike is found, the information in the registry can help connect it back to its rightful owner.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does it cost anything to register my bike?
Registration is free! It only takes about 5 minutes with the 529 Garage app to preserve information and photos about your bicycle. If it’s ever stolen, you’ll have what you need to report the theft to police and your insurance company.
What information should I have ready before I register?
It helps to have your bike’s serial number, make, model, colour, and clear photos. If you have proof of purchase, keep that for your records as well.
What should I do if my bike is stolen?
Report the theft to police as soon as possible and make sure your bike is flagged in the registry. Having an accurate registration with photos and identifiers can help support recovery efforts.
Can Project 529 help if I am buying a used bike?
Yes. Checking a bike’s serial number before you buy can help you avoid purchasing a bike that has been reported missing.
Is registering my bike a replacement for using a good lock?
No. Registration is one part of protecting your bike. Using a strong lock, securing your bike properly, and parking in visible, well-used areas are still important steps.
I don't live in Surrey but I'd like to register my bike, is that possible?
The SPS 529 Bike Registration events are only available to Surrey residents, however anyone can register by downloading the 529 Garage app, or through 529garage.com
