Choose Your Path
Helping youth understand the reality of gangs, and the power of choice.
In partnership with Surrey School District and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia, the Surrey Police Service Youth Services Unit proudly presents Choose Your Path; a dynamic and engaging youth empowerment presentation designed for students in Grades 7–12.
Through real-life stories, interactive discussions and practical guidance, Choose Your Path helps youth understand the realities and risks associated with gang involvement, and empowers them with the knowledge and skills to make safe, positive choices for their future.
What Students Learn
Students will explore:
- What a gang is and how gangs operate
- How gangs recruit and target youth
- The risks and consequences of gang involvement
- How and why youth may become involved in gangs
- Warning signs and recruitment tactics
- Strategies for making safe, positive choices
- Where to turn for help, support and trusted guidance
Why Choose Your Path?
Choose Your Path goes beyond a traditional classroom presentation. It’s designed to create an open, engaging conversation with youth about the real-life pressures and choices they may face.
The presentation takes a prevention-first approach, helping youth recognize recruitment tactics, understand the potential consequences of gang involvement and build the confidence and skills to make positive choices before they are faced with difficult decisions.
Rather than focusing only on the risks, Choose Your Path empowers youth to see that they have options—and that the choices they make today can shape their future.
What makes it different:
- Interactive: Students are encouraged to participate, ask questions and share perspectives.
- Relatable: Real-life stories and scenarios help connect the topics to situations youth may encounter.
- Prevention-focused: The presentation addresses risks and recruitment tactics before youth become involved.
- Empowering: Students leave with practical tools and strategies for making positive choices.
- Connection-focused: Connection-focused: Officers create an open and supportive environment where students can ask questions, share concerns and identify trusted sources of support. When appropriate, officers can also connect youth with relevant resources and services, including counselling and gang-exit strategies and supports.

The Youth Services Unit collaborates closely with schools and community organizations to ensure young people have safe, supportive environments to grow and thrive.
