A 38-year-old man from Surrey has now been charged in connection with a fatal hit-and run investigation from April 2025.

Background:

At approximately 4:11 pm on April 13, 2025, police received reports of three children pedestrians being struck by a vehicle in the intersection of 164 Street and 108 Avenue, Surrey. The driver did not remain at the scene. Surrey Fire Service firefighters and BCEHS paramedics attended the scene and despite life-saving medical interventions, a six-year-old girl died.

A seven-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy sustained non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision.

Update:

Over the past year, RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) investigators have been working tirelessly to secure evidence and piece together the circumstances surrounding this fatal motor vehicle incident. Through this complex investigation, officers were able to identify one suspect who is believed to be responsible for the fatal motor vehicle collision.

On September 10, 2026, BC Prosecution Service approved the following twelve (12) Criminal Code charges against 38-year-old Baldeep Chahal from Surrey, that include:

• One (1) count of dangerous driving causing death; 
• Two (2) counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm;
• One (1) count of impaired driving causing death;
• Two (2) counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm;
• One (1) count of blood alcohol concentration that was equal to or exceeded 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, while driving causing death;
• Two (2) counts of blood alcohol concentration that was equal to or exceeded 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, while driving causing bodily harm;
• One (1) count of failing to stop after being involved in an accident resulting in death; and
• Two (2) counts of failing to stop after being involved in an accident resulting in bodily harm.

“This was a highly complex investigation and RCMP SPOSU officers remained steadfast over the past several months to reach this significant milestone,” says Chief Superintendent Wendy Mehat, Officer-in-Charge of the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit. “I am proud of the hard work and dedication shown by our team to ensure there is accountability in this file. We extend our condolences to the victim’s family and hope this charge approval provides some measure of relief to them.”

As the investigation is now before the courts, no additional information can be provided.
