Five Excessive Speeding Tickets Issued in One Morning
Surrey Police Service (SPS) is reminding drivers to slow down and obey construction zone speed zones after issuing five excessive speed tickets yesterday, four of which were in construction zones.
Speeding is a leading contributing cause of collisions. Every year construction zone workers are injured or killed due to people not slowing down or taking care while driving in construction zones. On January 7, 2026, SPS Road Safety officers issued five excessive speeding tickets to drivers, including four in construction zones. One of those cited in a construction zone was allegedly travelling 102 km/h in a posted 30 km/h zone.
SPS would like to remind drivers that construction speed zone limits are generally reduced to 70 km/h on highways and 30 km/h on municipal roads when workers are present. Speed limiters are mandated for heavy commercial vehicles and fines for speeding are doubled. Some helpful safety tips include:
- Pay attention to the signs leading up to the construction zone, as they will often have important speed, restriction, and direction information
- Slow down when driving towards a construction zone, as they are often high-collision zones
- Stay alert and minimize distractions when entering and driving through a construction zone
- Always follow the directions of flaggers
- Give space, if safe to do so, to those working in construction zones
