National Senior Safety Week – Protecting Seniors from Distraction Thefts
Surrey Police Service (SPS) and the City of Surrey are raising awareness about distraction thefts during this year’s National Seniors Safety Week taking place November 6-12. Practical safety tips and educational materials are being shared to help seniors protect themselves from these targeted crimes.
So far in 2025, there have been 54 reported distraction thefts in Surrey, with many targeting seniors. These incidents typically involve one or two people stopping a senior and asking them for directions or complimenting them on their jewellery. The suspects then use distraction techniques such as hugging, handshakes, physical contact, or offering religious blessings to steal valuable items or swap out real jewellery with imitations.
It is often only after the victim returns home and speaks with family members that they realize something is missing or has been tampered with. Perpetrators of distraction thefts often target seniors and those who they think may not challenge them, might not notice the switch, or might be easily victimized.
To help prevent these types of incidents, SPS and the City of Surrey encourage residents to share the tips below with their elderly family members so together we can protect the seniors from being victims of distraction thefts.
Personal safety tips to prevent distraction thefts include:
- Avoid wearing valuable jewellery in public or cover or conceal it under clothing.
- Carry limited valuables or money.
- Maintain personal space and do not let strangers touch you.
- Be loud if you need help — don’t be afraid to shout or yell.
- Ask for photo ID from service or delivery people you aren’t familiar with.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Walk with a friend or family member whenever possible.
- Don’t hesitate to call police (9-1-1) if you need assistance or see suspicious activity.
