Man Charged Following December Shooting

One man has been charged with a number of criminal offences following an investigation by the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) into a December 16, 2024 shooting in Newton.
Shortly before 6 pm on Monday, December 16, 2024, Surrey Police Service (SPS) Frontline officers responded to a call from a woman saying that she and her husband had been shot while outside in the 12600 block 67B Avenue, Surrey. In their car nearby, was a young child who was unharmed. Both victims were taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries. On January 15, 2025, police arrested 21-year-old Squamish resident Gagandeep Singh Bakshi and on January 16, 2025 he was charged by the BC Prosecution Service with one count each of attempted murder, discharge a firearm with intent, and aggravated assault, as well as two counts of assault with a weapon.
The investigation into the shooting was led by the SPOSU Serious Crime Unit and resulted in search warrants being executed at residences in Squamish, Delta, and Surrey between January 16 and 17, 2025 with the assistance of Sea to Sky RCMP, Delta Police Department, SPS, and the Integrated Emergency Response Team (IERT).
Gagandeep Bakshi has been remanded into custody until his next scheduled court appearance on February 10, 2025 in Surrey Provincial Court.
SPS became Surrey’s police of jurisdiction on November 29, 2024, assuming responsibility for policing. The RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) is providing temporary policing support until SPS is fully established as a standalone police agency.
