To obtain a Police Information Check (formerly known as a Criminal Record Check) through Surrey Police Service (SPS), you must be a Surrey resident. Police Information Checks (PICs) are intended for volunteer or paid work within Canada only. You must have a request from your prospective employer or volunteer agency to request a PIC.

PICs are not for personal use.  To request a check for personal use, you must use the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act Section 5 - How to make a request - Province of British Columbia (gov.bc.ca).

Note: We cannot guarantee same day service. Each application is unique and wait times vary.

Obtain a Police Information Check (PIC)

Please visit the Front Counter of Surrey Police Service Headquarters, located at 14355 57th Avenue Surrey, BC. No appointment is necessary.

  •  The fee for a PIC is $91.10 and is payable by cash, Interac, Visa or MasterCard.
  • You will need two separate pieces of government issued identification (one photo ID) and proof of your current address in Surrey. Please note BC Care Cards and Social Insurance Cards are no longer forms of ID and will not be accepted. The new BC Services Card is acceptable but must be separate to your Driver’s Licence.
  • PICs are typically completed while you wait; however, processing times may vary.

If you do not reside in Surrey, please attend the police office in your home community. If you reside outside of Canada and require a Police Information Check, please visit http://www.rcmp.gc.ca/en/criminal-record-checks.

Police Information Check for volunteering

PICs required for volunteering are free of charge. You will be required to bring in a current volunteer letter from the requesting agency verifying that your PIC is for a volunteer position.

Vulnerable Sector Check

If you will be working or volunteering with vulnerable members of society such as children, the elderly, or persons with disabilities, you may need to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check. This check is done in conjunction with your Police Information Check at no additional cost. Vulnerable Sector Checks are designed to protect vulnerable Canadians.

A Vulnerable Sector Check is initiated by the police in the jurisdiction where you live. Your prospective employer or organization should tell you if you require a Vulnerable Sector Check, as not all positions require one. Examples of positions that may require a Vulnerable Sector Check include teachers, social workers, daycare workers, nurses, ride hailing drivers (e.g.: Uber and Lyft), and taxi services.

The police will use the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) system as well as their own database to conduct a background search based on your name, gender, and date of birth. If your gender and date of birth match to a pardoned sex offender record, you will be asked to provide fingerprints to confirm your identity. Please note that:

  • This is not an accusation of criminality, and fingerprints are used to confirm your identity only;
  • Your fingerprints will be destroyed after 90 days;
  • PICs that entail fingerprinting as part of the Vulnerable Sector Check have a fee of $116.10 instead of $91.10;
  • Vulnerable Sector Checks will not be conducted on anyone younger than 18 years of age.

Important

  • Read about Vulnerable Sector Checks
  • Staff at the Surrey Police Service will advise you if fingerprinting is required at the time of processing.
  • To see if you may be required to pay a Federal processing fee, check out Processing times and fees.  If applicable, the additional $25 fee is collected electronically or by cash.
  • Fingerprinting is done Monday to Friday between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm only.
